World Championship Starts tomorrow in Italy

Mumm 30 World Championship - World Championship Starts tomorrow in Italy
PORTOFERRAIO, ITALY-(7-10-2003) The Mumm 30 World Championship will start tomorrow in Portoferraio, (Elba Island) Italy: a fleet of 41 yachts will be ready on the starting line at 11.30 for the first out of 11 races scheduled until Saturday 11th October.

Today most of the fleet took part in the Moby Cup warm up races, sailing two windward-leeward courses with a southerly breeze blowing up to 18 knots. The winner of Moby Cup is the French Jimmy Pahun steering Region Ile de France.

Among the sailors competing in the event many America’s cup sailors such as Murray Jones (tactcian on bord Vincenzo Onorato’s Mascalzone Latino, the Italian owner and winner of 2000 Mumm 30 World Championship), Hamish Pepper (calling tactict on board Italia Claudio Recchi Cheyen (European champion in 2002), Tommmaso Chieffi (tactician on board Enfant Terrible) and Vasco Vascotto, the skipper of next Mascalzone Latino Challenge on board Italian Bagua.

The Portoferraio, Elba venue is spectacular with all of the boats moored mediterranean style on the main street of Portoferaio.

The MOBY Cruise ship is a wonderful place to host an event. All of the crews are interacting and meeting each other is a way that is not possible when each crew stays in a different hotel or residence.

Tonight is the Grand Opening Ceremony and for the 41 Mumm 30 teams from around the World the week has already been great. Now we hope for fair wind.
